Welcome to the North Carolina Children's Airway Center!

The N.C. Children's Airway Center offers coordinated, multidisciplinary evaluation and treatment of children with complex congenital or acquired airway disorders. Located at N.C. Children's Hospital, a part of UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, the Center brings together the largest concentration of pediatric airway specialists in the Southeast. These specialists include pediatric pulmonologists and otolaryngology/head and neck surgeons as well as dedicated experts in multiple disciplines including pediatric nursing, speech therapy, respiratory therapy, nutrition, and social work.

The N.C. Children's Airway Center is one of a few pediatric airway centers nationwide. Our primary focus is providing collaborative care to children with airway disorders. We provide coordinated, specialized care, including:

  • Coordinated scheduling of clinic appointments and diagnostic procedures
  • Comprehensive, individualized assessments and treatment plans, jointly developed by specialists from multiple disciplines as needed
  • Individualized medical and surgical therapy
  • Home- and school-based caregiver education
  • Assistance with accessing local health care resources
  • Timely, in-depth communication with referring physicians
  • Multidisciplinary patient care conferences
  • Transition to community-based care


We also offer consultation from a comprehensive array of children's clinical services. Specialized diagnostic services include:

  • Laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy
  • Esophageal pH / impedance monitoring
  • Pediatric imaging
  • Infant and child pulmonary function testing
  • Gastrointestinal endoscopy
  • Sleep disorders center


The foundation of the N.C. Children's Airway Center rests on more than 20 years of experience in diagnostic airway endoscopy and surgical intervention in children with complex airway disorders. Our vision is to foster collaboration with providers throughout the region through service, training, and continuing education and to provide opportunities to advance our fields through ongoing clinical, basic science, and translational research.
