Patient and Family Centered Care

At North Carolina Children’s Hospital, we value the relationship between families, patients, and staff. We recognize that the best possible care is provided when the patient and family are at the center of the health care team and feel that patient- and family-centered care is essential in our clinical, teaching, and research practices.

The following four key-concepts are at the heart of patient- and family-centered care and encompass the ideals we strive to embrace in our practice:

  1. Dignity and Respect: We believe that respect for each patient’s and family’s values, beliefs, and religious and cultural background is required to develop a relationship built on trust. We continually endeavor to listen to and honor family perspectives and choices.
  2. Collaboration: We feel that, in order to be successful, staff, patients, and family members should work together to develop, implement, and evaluate policies and programs; to design health care facilities; to plan and provide professional education; and to enhance the delivery of care.
  3. Information Sharing: We understand the need for complete and unbiased information. We try to communicate and share information with patients and families in ways that are affirming and useful, in order for them to effectively participate in care and decision-making.
  4. Participation: We hope to create an environment where patients and families are encouraged and supported in participating in care and decision-making at the level they choose.
