Anesthesiology
Overview
The Department of Anesthesiology has a group of anesthesiologists specialty-trained in pediatric anesthesia care. These pediatric anesthesiologists are experts in the anesthesia, sedation, and pain management needs of children from infancy to young adulthood. They work in close collaboration with the Division of Pediatric Surgery, evaluating complex medical problems requiring surgical intervention and planning the appropriate pre- and postoperative care. A pediatric pain service is available to provide nerve blocks and epidurals to those patients who might benefit from this modality of postoperative care.
In addition to providing general anesthesia and pain management to surgical patients, the department's pediatric anesthesiologists provide anesthesia and sedation for many procedures outside the operating room, such as diagnostic testing (e.g., MRIs, CT scans, endoscopies, etc.) and during certain therapeutic treatments (e.g., radiation therapy, etc.).
