Programs and Services

The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology oversees several specialty clinics/programs:

General Endocrine | Diabetes Mellitus | Osteoporosis
Turner Syndrome | Lipid Disorders | Cystic Fibrosis-Related Diabetes

What to Expect

Clinical care at N.C. Children's Hospital is organized with the dual missions of 1) providing our patients with expert care and 2) teaching endocrinology to young physicians. At clinic, your child will be seen first by a nurse clinician, medical student, pediatric resident (doctor specializing in pediatrics) or pediatric endocrinology fellow (pediatrician specializing in pediatric endocrinology) who will take your child’s medical history and perform a physical exam.

This information will be discussed with one of our attending (senior) physicians, who will then meet with you and may repeat parts of the history and exam. The attending physician makes or approves all care decisions. Although this can be a time-consuming, the child ultimately benefits from the thoughtful and deliberate consideration of his/her problem. Other benefits include:, and all care decisions are made or approved by an attending physician.

Our experience has shown having several medical experts examine and review each patient results in better management of each child's health. With that in mind, we offer:

  • A team approach to care – Our attending physicians are faculty of the UNC School of Medicine and share a joint practice. Because they rotate their clinical responsibilities with other faculty responsibilities, you may see any one of several pediatric endocrinologists, giving you access to many experts rather than just one.
  • Care conferences – Our physicians discuss the care of each patient seen in clinic at a weekly faculty conference, giving each child’s case a second group review.
  • Emotional support – We care about more than just your child’s physical well-being. Many of our patients are at risk for developing social or adjustment problems, so our division has a dedicated pediatric psychologist and social worker available for consultation.
  • Financial help – Financial counselors are available to deal with any questions or problems related to billing and insurance.

Please do not hesitate to bring to our attention any concerns you have about your child’s health, development or the care your family is receiving in our clinic. We hope this information will help us work together more effectively in reaching our mutual goal of fostering the growth of happy, healthy children.
