Nephrology

Overview

The Division of Pediatric Nephrology provides diagnosis and management of congenital anomalies and acquired disorders of the kidneys and genitourinary tract, as well as treatment of chronic kidney disease, including pre- and post-transplant care. The division offers consultation for problems including hematuria, proteinuria, nephrotic syndrome, hypertension, acid-base and salt-water disturbances, tubulointerstitial nephropathy and acute renal failure.

The division's pediatric specialists perform the following procedures: percutaneous renal biopsy; peritoneal dialysis; ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, continuous cycling peritoneal dialysis; hemodialysis; and continuous renal replacement therapy. The division's outpatient services are provided at N.C. Children's Hospital's outpatient clinic and at the UNC Ambulatory Care Center, two blocks from UNC Hospitals. Learn more by visiting the Division of Pediatric Nephrology's Web site or the Pediatric Nephrology Group's page on the UNC Kidney Center's Web site.

Special Services

The Pediatric Nephrology Division treats end-stage renal disease and performs peritoneal and hemodialysis and hemofiltration in infants, children, and adolescents. An interdisciplinary team comprised of nephrologists, nurse practitioners, dialysis and transplant nurse coordinators, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, play therapists, dietitians and hospital-based school teachers, provides comprehensive support to maintain age-appropriate school performance and ensure optimal rehabilitation during dialysis and following transplantation.

Concurrent clinics with the Division of Pediatric Rheumatology provide a comprehensive approach to patients with systemic disease complicated by nephritis. Further, combined clinics with the Pediatric Urology Division provide comprehensive diagnosis and management of infants with congenital obstructive uropathy and children with hematuria, urolithiasis and urinary tract infection complicated by ureterovesical reflux.

The division's transition coordinator helps adolescents and young adults prepare to become successful self-managers of their medical conditions through an evidence-based program.
