Overview

U.S. News and World Report ranked North Carolina Children's Hospital eleventh in the nation among hospitals caring for children with respiratory disorders on its 2009-2010 "America's Best Children's Hospitals" list. This was the highest rank achieved by any children’s hospital in North Carolina in 2009 and makes the pediatric respiratory program the highest ranking of any program at UNC Hospitals.

The Division of Pediatric Pulmonology is the heart of the pediatric respiratory program. The division's physicians offer comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for infants and children with acute and chronic pulmonary disorders. They are nationally and internationally renowned for their clinical expertise and research endeavors, making N.C. Children's Hospital a major referral center for children with many pulmonary diseases, including cystic fibrosis, asthma, primary ciliary dyskinesia, sarcoidosis, chronic lung disease of prematurity, apnea/SIDS/sleep disorders, and congenital and acquired airway disorders.

The division's physicians and nurses manage complex pulmonary disease in the context of a multidisciplinary team. The care team includes experts in nutrition, physical therapy, speech pathology, and social work, and the division works closely with the divisions of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Pediatric Otolaryngology, Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery, and Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery to provide a comprehensive pulmonary management program.

The division provides outpatient consultations at N.C. Children’s Hospital in Chapel Hill, the N.C. Children's Specialty Clinic in Raleigh, and in the AHEC (Area Health Education Centers) clinic in Wilmington. Inpatients are cared for at N.C. Children's Hospital in Chapel Hill.
