The Division of Pediatric Pulmonology oversees several specialty clinics/programs including:
Cystic Fibrosis
UNC is home to a nationally prominent program in cystic fibrosis (CF), the UNC Cystic Fibrosis Center. Adult and pediatric CF patients are cared for in separate, multidisciplinary CF clinics by doctors who are leading the search for new treatments of this disease. The Division of Pediatric Pulmonology operates the pediatric portion of the center's activities, providing comprehensive clinical services for infants, children, and adolescents with CF. The division's physicians are supported by physical and respiratory therapists, nutritionists, psychologists, nurses, and social workers with special expertise in treating this patient population. The N.C. Children's Airway Center
The North Carolina Children's Airway Center is a multidisciplinary program at N.C. Children's Hospital in Chapel Hill, offering coordinated evaluation and treatment of children with congenital and acquired structural airway disorders. It is one of only five pediatric airway centers nationwide and the only one located in the Atlantic coast states. Bringing together the largest concentration of pediatric airway specialists in the Southeast, the N.C. Children's Airway Center integrates state-of-the-art medical and surgical care with dedicated pediatric nursing, respiratory therapy, speech therapy, and social work.
The Airway Center provides coordinated, specialized care to its patients, including coordinated scheduling of clinic appointments and diagnostic procedures; multidisciplinary patient care conferences; comprehensive, individualized treatment plans; timely, in-depth communication with referring physicians; and caregiver education and assistance with accessing local health care resources. Flexible Bronchoscopy and Laryngoscopy
The Division of Pediatric Pulmonology provides leading-edge expertise in flexible bronchoscopy, a procedure enabling physicians to visualize the upper airway, larynx, and lower airways. Flexible bronchoscopy is performed in the Pediatric Endoscopy/ Bronchoscopy Center at N.C. Children's Hospital, as well as in the operating rooms, imaging suites, and intensive care units. Some flexible bronchoscopic procedures are done as part of a multi-procedure evaluation through the N.C. Children's Airway Center. Infant Pulmonary Function Testing
The Pediatric Pulmonology Division also performs infant and preschool lung function testing in state-of-the-art facilities located at N.C. Children's Hospital in Chapel Hill. This procedure enables our physicians to assess lung function in patients too young to perform traditional lung function tests. Sleep Studies and Apnea Monitoring
Both the Division of Pulmonary Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine and the Department of Neurology operate sleep clinics to evaluate patients with all types of sleep-related problems. The UNC Sleep Center has four beds and performs overnight sleep studies Sunday through Friday nights. Physicians in the Pediatric Pulmonology Division utilize these resources to evaluate and treat children with sleep-disordered breathing. Pediatric Lung Transplant
Physicians in the Pediatric Pulmonology Division participate in the multidisciplinary evaluation of children with severe lung disease for lung transplant and supervise post-transplant medical care for children undergoing this procedure.
