Rehabilitation
Overview
The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation's Pediatric Rehabilitation Division offers comprehensive, interdisciplinary care to children with a wide range of conditions that impede normal movement and mobility. Commonly seen conditions include cerebral palsy, spina bifida, stroke, brain injury, genetic abnormalities and other developmental disabilities.
The division seeks to maximize patients' function by offering a variety of services to children with disabilities, including interdisciplinary specialty clinics, inpatient consultation services at N.C. Children's Hospital, botulinum toxin injections for spasticity, and Internet-based telemedicine video-conferencing to families in remote locations of the state. Outpatient services are provided at the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Outpatient Clinic, located within N.C. Memorial Hospital, which provides a variety of rehabilitation services. Special Services
TelAbility
TelAbility is an innovative, community-oriented, interdisciplinary program that uses telecommunications to improve the lives of children with disabilities. Using real time video-conferencing and Internet technologies, TelAbility provides comprehensive, coordinated, family-centered care to children with disabilities across North Carolina. The program also offers education, training and peer support for caregivers.
The Division of Pediatric Rehabilitation oversees several specialty clinics/programs for children with the following conditions:
Cerebral Palsy
The UNC Cerebral Palsy Clinic provides comprehensive, coordinated, family-centered care to children and adolescents with cerebral palsy. The clinic’s medical director performs a comprehensive intake evaluation of each child's condition, abilities and special needs. During clinic, the primary care team (comprised of a pediatric physiatrist, therapists and other medical specialists) rotates between patient rooms to provide appropriate evaluations, care and educational services to promote optimal function and independence in daily life. The team works closely with specialty-trained physicians and clinicians representing other pediatric subspecialties as needed to complement patient care.
Spina Bifida
The UNC Spina Bifida Clinic is an interdisciplinary clinic that provides comprehensive, coordinated, family-centered care for children and adolescents with spina bifida and spinal cord injuries so that they may enter adulthood as happily and independently as possible. The primary care team (comprised of a pediatric physiatrist, therapists and other medical specialists) rotates through exam rooms during clinic to maximize patient and family convenience. Neurosurgery and urology physicians are available as needed, as are specialty-trained physicians and clinicians representing other pediatric subspecialties.
