Overview

The Division of Pediatric Surgery at UNC-Chapel Hill is the largest pediatric surgery group in the state. The division provides primary surgical care to children from the eastern half of the state at North Carolina Children’s Hospital and is a national referral center for specialized surgery.

The division's board-certified pediatric surgeons are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for consultations, questions, and referrals. They provide the highest-level surgical services in a family-centered, child-friendly environment, while educating patients, their families, colleagues and the community about surgical issues that are unique to children.

In addition to the care they provide at N.C. Children's Hospital, the division's surgeons provide professional medical services at WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh, Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro, and New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington as well as emergency coverage at Duke Medical Center in Durham. Outpatient consultations are available in locations throughout the state, including Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Greensboro, and Wilmington.

Division Highlights

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Minimizing the impact of surgery on children is a constant goal, and technological advancements in the operating room are constantly evolving to minimize the impact of surgery itself. The division's surgeons make extensive use of minimally invasive techniques for many routine operations such as appendicitis as well as for complex procedures on the chest and abdomen.

Neonatal Surgery

The division's surgeons perform more neonatal operations than any other group in the state, treating a vast array of diseases that covers the spectrum from complex operations on premature neonates to the separation of conjoined twins.

Robotic Surgery

Surgical robotics is a rapidly developing field, leading to reduced intra-operative blood loss, increased control with small fragile tissue dissections and repairs, and less post-operative recovery time. Pediatric surgeons at N.C. Children's Hospital were the first in the state to provide these remarkable technologic advancements to children and continue to have the most extensive clinical experience in North Carolina.

Pediatric Surgical Specialties

General pediatric surgical services are complemented by the following pediatric surgical specialties: cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology/head and neck surgery, and plastic surgery.
